HAKARI provides a sanctuary of seclusion, however, there are a myriad of attractions only a short distance away.

  • Cartwright Reserve, 100 metres away is where you can stroll down to the waterfront or hike the Truganini Track. There is the Helios coffee cart located here Tuesday to Saturdays between 7:30am and 12:30pm and it’s a nice place to relax in a bushland setting.

  • Truganini Track, this popular local walk climbs steadily uphill through natural forest to the Mt Nelson Signal Station 2.1km away. Taking less than 2 hours to complete, the Signal Station at the summit offers panoramic views extending south to Bruny Island and Betsy Island and east towards South Arm and the Tasman Peninsula. Along the way you may spot echidna, wombats, wallabies and plenty of bird life.

  • Long Beach, is a two minute drive at lower Sandy Bay and has an eclectic mix of shops, cafes and restaurants including the highly-rated Sea Grass Café on the Derwent (keep an eye out for dolphins or the local seal) and Beach House Café plus local favourites Ming Court, a Chinese family-style restaurant, and Sandy Bay Wood Fired Pizza. There’s also an IGA supermarket, butcher, chemist, newsagency and Post Office.

  • The twilight markets are another highlight, happening Friday evenings from October to March in the park, it’s where you’ll meet local and tourists  sampling local produce and gourmet delights to a backbeat of live music.

  • Taroona, the adjoining bayside village is worth a look with its historic c1870 ‘Shot Tower’ which when built was the tallest building in Australia. Today you can pop in for free, learn its history, climb the internal stairs to the top and perhaps enjoy a Devonshire Tea in the little café.

  • Sandy Bay, is a shopping precinct also not far away with supermarkets, restaurants, cafes and pubs as well as plenty of boutique stores for browsing and purchasing.

  • Hobart’s CBD is only a 10 minute drive up the road where parking is cheap and plentiful and there’s a host of things to do and see with attractions such as the legendary Salamanca Market and eatery scene, cosmopolitan restaurants and wine bars, Constitution Doc and ferries to MONA.

For day trips Hakari is ideally placed to visit Bruny Island, the Huon Valley, and the many little villages in Tasmania's south. It's also only a 90 minute drive to Port Arthur and the Tasmania peninsula and 30 minutes to Historic Richmond and only an hour to the Derwent Valley.
